Cohabitation law reform (fairer end to reationships)
August 2026
| The government pledged to strengthening the rights and protections available to women in cohabiting couples as part of their wider ambition to halve violence against women and girls in a decade. They therefore sought views on how to build a fairer legal framework for cohabitants: one that reflects the realities of modern family life and safeguards the most vulnerable, while retaining the distinct nature of marriage. Muslim Women's Network UK responded to the consultation particularly in relation to Muslim women in religious marriages that take place in the UK (without a civil marriage) which are not legally recognised in the UK. | |
