Gendered Islamophobia (Women and Equalities Committee)
April 2025
|
In addition to oral evidence given in January 2025, Muslim Women’s Network UK also submitted written evidence to the Women and Equalities Committee’s Gendered Islamophobia Inquiry, highlighting that Muslim women are disproportionately targeted by Islamophobic abuse, particularly due to visible markers of faith. This abuse is often gendered and compounded by race, class, and immigration status. The submission also outlines the significant impact on women’s mental health, freedom of movement, and participation in public life, with many women reluctant to report abuse due to concerns over inadequate support or fear of further victimisation. Key recommendations include recognising gendered Islamophobia as a form of gender-based violence, improving data collection, providing better support services, and promoting inclusive policies across schools, workplaces, and communities. |
