Standing in solidarity with Jewish Communities against hatred

Muslim Women’s Network UK (MWNUK) condemns in the strongest terms the horrific car-ramming and stabbing attack that took place near the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Manchester, which has tragically resulted in the loss of life and left others seriously injured. We stand in solidarity with Jewish communities across the UK during this painful time

The incident occurred on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar — a sacred time of fasting, reflection, and prayer. To have such an act of violence occur on this deeply significant day is deeply distressing and is likely to generate further heightened anxiety and concern for personal safety.

As Muslims, we recognise the resonance of this day. Yom Kippur shares roots and themes with Ashura, a date observed by Muslims in remembrance, repentance and hope — and with the Christian Day of Atonement. These overlapping traditions remind us that our communities are, in truth, connected by shared stories of struggle, deliverance, reflection, and standing against oppression. There is more that unites us than divides us.

MWNUK CEO Baroness Shaista Gohir said: “Our deepest condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives and to all those affected by this horrific terror attack. Jewish communities will be shaken and undoubtedly feel the impact of this incident. We stand shoulder to shoulder with our Jewish brothers and sisters in grief and solidarity. Violence and hate have no place in our society — we must all work together to build understanding and compassion between communities.”

While the full motives behind the attack are still being investigated, we are deeply concerned about the ongoing conflation between the actions of the Israeli government and Jewish communities in the UK. No faith group should ever be targeted or held responsible for the actions of a state. Antisemitism, like all forms of hate, has no place in our society. We call on all communities, faith leaders, and public institutions to strengthen efforts to challenge and prevent anti-religious hatred in all its forms.
