Starting with a networking breakfast, the small, informal events will include short presentations by inspirational women who are involved in shaping our communities and society at large, practical tools to help you take those first steps in applying for appointments and an opportunity to learn more about what being involved in public life actually means.
Taking part in public life could mean anything from being appointed to the Board of a public body, being a local councillor or school governor, or being involved in your local tenants association or NHS Trust. There are plenty of opportunities for women to use their professional skills and life experiences, and these WNC events aim to encourage women to have the confidence to give it a go. Come and join us and find out more!

Honouring the Victims of Forced Marriage and Honour Killings: Moving from Awareness to Action

A seminar which aims to take us from public awareness, debates about legislation and understanding cultural and religious rationale, to a practical conversation amongst all practitioners working in the areas of forced marriage and honour based violence. Discussion around questions like: why aren’t women using the FMPO and lawyers; what is happening in the educational context; what the Forced Marriage Unit and Consulates actually do in a forced marriage case; how effectively are practitioners working together to help victims.

This is a topic area that has been the focus of many academic discussions following the recent Forced Marriage (Civil Protection) Act 2007. The seminar aims to build upon recent internal courses and will prove highly beneficial to those working with Children and Families, Safeguarding, Solicitors, Barristers, members of the Constabulary, Social Workers, Magistrates, Legal Guardians and members of the Health Services.
The seminar will be presented by three highly influential speakers, at St Philips Chambers in Birmingham City Centre on 4th February 2010.
