Event Information Lecture: Indonesian Muslims and their Place in the Larger World of Islam When: December 7, 2011 - December 7, 2011 | 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM Where: 210 Euston Road, Aga Khan University Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations, UK, United Kingdom Contact Person: Ms Anne Czambor
At over 200 million, Indonesia’s Muslims constitute a nation with the largest population of Muslims in the world. However, they have never played a significant role in global Muslim thought and action corresponding to their numbers. Given the unique, and in many ways attractive, features of Indonesian Islam, this calls for an explanation. A comparison with Turkey, another non-Arab Muslim civilisation, will highlight some relevant factors.
The uniqueness of Indonesian Islam, in its liberal and progressive as well its radical varieties, owes much to the willingness and even eagerness to learn from authoritative others and reshape ideas and practices under their influence. Fundamentalist and Islamist currents from Saudi Arabia and Egypt have been conspicuous among these global influences. However, liberal and progressive thinkers such as the Pakistani Fazlur Rahman, the Sudanese Mahmud Taha and Abdullahi An-Na’im, the Egyptian Nasr Abu Zayd and the Moroccan Muhammad al-Jabri, have also found a much wider following in Indonesia than in their own countries.
The increasing international visibility of Indonesia since the demise of the New Order has made it an attractive ‘market’ for missionary movements as diverse as the Ahmadiyah and the Tablighi Jama’at from South Asia, the Gülen movement from Turkey, and the Naqshbandiyya Haqqaniyya Sufi order from North America.

CHAPTER 16 - SURAH AL-NAHL (THE BEE)
with Ustadh Hafiz Abdullah Muhammad
Date: Tuesday 29th November 2011 Time: 6pm - 9pm Venue: Idea Store Canary Wharf, Churchill Place, Canary Wharf, London E14 5RB
Tel: 07980 556 772 / 07837 645 758
Surah al-Nahl (the Bee) is the 16th Chapter of the Qur’an named after a reference to the bee in verse 68 of the Surah where we are told that Allah inspires the bee in making honey. The Qur’an describes both the Qur’an itself and honey as ‘healing’ (shifa) for the spiritual and physical ailments of mankind. This Sürah presents very convincing proofs of the oneness of God (Tawheed) and refutation of association partners with Him (Shirk) based on clear ‘signs’ in the universe and in people’s own creation. The Surah enumerates many of the blessings (Ni’mah) of Allah and repeatedly mentions this theme: “If you count the blessings of Allah, you will not be able to enumerate it” (v.18), “Whatever blessings you have, it is from Allah” (v.53) and “They recognize the blessings of Allah but deny it” (v.83).
Among the numerous blessings enumerated in this Surah are Divine Revelation (v.2), creation of heavens and earth (v.3), creation of humans (v.4), cattle providing food, clothing and transport (v.8), water (v.10), plants (v.11), subjugation of the universe to human beings (v.12), adornment of the earth (v.13), the sea (v.14), mountains (v.15), stars (v.16), rain (v.65), milk (v.66), spouses (v.72), faculties of understanding (v.78), birds (v.79), homes (v.80) and food (v.114). In Surah Ibrahim that we studied previously, Allah says: “If you are grateful, I will give you more. But if you are ungrateful, then My punishment is severe” (14:7). Towards the end of this Surah, we are told that Prophet Ibrahim was chosen by God because he was “grateful for His blessings” (Shakir li An’umih) [v.121].
In this session of the monthly Journey Through the Qur’an series, we will examine the history, structure and guidance provided in this Surah and its contemporary relevance.
All welcome - Notes included Please bring a copy of the Quran and pray mat
Attendance of previous sessions not necessary and no pre-requisite knowledge required.
During the Two World Wars more than 4 million men were recuited into the British Indian Army, they came from various regions of British India (Bangladesh, India and Pakistan); Christians, Gurkhas, Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs fought side by side in the largest volunteer army ever recorded. British India committed more men and resources to Britain during the two wars than any other colony or dominion. Jahan Mahmood will discuss reasons behind recruitment, the relationship between British and Indian personnel, and the struggles and sacrifices made by the average Indian soldier during some of the bloodiest battles of the First and Second World War.
Did you know:
* In relation to their overall population, the Sikhs provided more soldiers than any other ethnic class. * More Hindus were awarded the coveted Victoria Cross, in the war against Nazi Germany, than any other religious group * The Muslim community produced the largest proportion of Boy soldiers to Britain's campaign during the Second World War
Light finger buffet provided.
If you are interested in attending, volunteering or stall space then please contact Nasreen on 0775 907 1343 or n9564493@hotmail.com

Event Information Lecture: Should there be faith-based schools in a pluralist society? When: November 23, 2011 - November 23, 2011 | 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM Where: 210 Euston Road. Details
Britain has a long history of faith-based schools within the state system. However, there are increasingly powerful voices arguing against this for a variety of reasons: the tax-payer should not pay for the religious education of minority believers; faith schools are divisive in a society which should be seeking coherence and solidarity; faith-based schools indoctrinate; etc. These arguments will be examined in the context of a rapidly changing Britain and of an increasing secularisation of society.
