The Forced Marriage etc. (Protection and Jurisdiction) (Scotland) Act was passed by the Scottish Parliament on 22 March 2011 to provide a specific civil remedy for those threatened with forced marriage and those already in such a marriage. The Act received Royal Assent on 27 April 2011 and came into force on 28 November 2011.
A forced marriage is a marriage in which one or both spouses do not (or, in the case of children/young people/adults at risk, cannot) consent to the marriage and duress is involved. Duress can include physical, psychological, financial, sexual and emotional pressure, threatening conduct, harassment, threat of blackmail, use of deception and other means.
This session will explore what is meant by a forced marriage and explain the provisions of the new The Forced Marriage etc. (Protection and Jurisdiction) (Scotland) Act.
By the end of the session attendees will:
- Understand the difference between arranged and forced marriage.
- Understand how the Forced Marriage etc. (Protection and Jurisdiction) (Scotland) Act 2011, and a range of other legislation, can be used to protect children/adults at risk of forced marriage.
- Identify a range of support available and where to seek advice if working with someone affected by forced marriage.
Facilitator: Mridul Wadwha (Shakti Women’s Aid).
Mridul Wadhwa is the Information and Education Officer at Shakti Women’s Aid. Mridul campaigns and delivers training and consultancy on issues affecting Black Minority Ethnic women experiencing domestic abuse. Mridul has a masters in the management of training and development from the University of Edinburgh. She migrated to Scotland in 2004 and is a descendant of a clan of refugees and migrants to India.
This is a one day course designed to equip professionals with skills and knowledge to identify those vulnerable to forced marriage and take basic action in response. It is not expected that people will be or feel ‘expert’ at the end of the course, but they will have a heightened understanding of the issues surrounding forced marriage, an understanding of what is expected of them in their professional role, and knowledge of the sources of help available.
Cost: £95 per statutory sector delegate/£75 per voluntary sector delegate inclusive of buffet lunch.
Carlisle Business Centre, 60 Carlisle Road, Manningham.
Topic
Are being personally influenced by the media? and how does this impact on our lives and beliefs.
Background
On 30th April, the first Conversation Café was launched with 32 women from the Muslim & Christian Faith communities coming together at St Paul\'s Church, Manningham to explore the creative and sometimes controversial relationship between religion, style and fashion. This is certainly visible on the High Street or turn on the TV to see that in recent years fashion has become central to expressions of personal faith, spirituality, and ethics for women of different faiths and for those who self-define themselves as secular.

The Deen Institute proudly announces its first ‘Dialogue within Islam’ event. The conference titled: Have Muslims Misunderstood Evolution?, will for the first time in the UK, witness prominent Muslims tackling the controversial topic of evolution in a public forum.
'Dialogue within Islam' events seek to engage with challenging ideas of concern to Muslims, in a setting that allows for critical dialogue.
Historically, Muslims have held conflicting opinions on the theory of evolution and whether science and Islamic theology share a point of convergence. In recent years, a polarised debate on the topic has left many Muslims confused as to what Islam does, or doesn’t say, about human evolution.
The Deen Institute will therefore provide a platform to different viewpoints so that the topic might be debated and examined in an honest, respectful and tolerant environment.
The conference will elucidate the issue of human evolution from an Islamic viewpoint, in order to provide the audience with a clear understanding of the points of convergence between contemporary scientific theories and Islamic theology.
