During the Two World Wars more than 4 million men were recuited into the British Indian Army, they came from various regions of British India (Bangladesh, India and Pakistan); Christians, Gurkhas, Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs fought side by side in the largest volunteer army ever recorded. British India committed more men and resources to Britain during the two wars than any other colony or dominion. Jahan Mahmood will discuss reasons behind recruitment, the relationship between British and Indian personnel, and the struggles and sacrifices made by the average Indian soldier during some of the bloodiest battles of the First and Second World War.
