A Muslim woman became one of the youngest councillors in the country on May 5.
Conservative Rabia Bhatti, who has just turned 20, thought to be one of Chesham’s youngest councillors, and the youngest female Muslim councillor in the country, was elected to represent Newtown ward.
She follows in the footsteps of her father, county and district Councillor, Mohammad Bhatti.
“It feels amazing to be one of the youngest councillors in the country. It really is a time for change and what better pioneers than the generation of today leading the generation of tomorrow?” she told The Muslim News.
Bhatti has a history of holding responsible and public speaking roles in the community. She became a governor at Newtown School last year - the youngest governor in Bucks at the time - she chaired the Chiltern Community Cohesion Conference in Chesham in March and is the first student president at Aylesbury College, where she is studying philosophy, psychology and law.
Bhatti says she hopes to “become the youngest Muslim MP in order to inspire other ethnic minorities to stand in both local and national elections.”
She added: “Whether I win or not is not important. I look at the bigger picture, knocking down the barriers of both ages, gender and ethnicity come first, showing people that it can be done and there is nothing that should stop them from fighting for what they believe and fighting for change.”
