Hot Topics: Women in Diaspora & Peace
Event Title  Hot Topics: Women in Diaspora & Peace
Posted Date  13/9/2017
Event Place  London

This autumn St Ethelburga’s is presenting a series of 'Hot Topics' dialogues to bring disparate groups together to confront urgent and pressing questions.

As diaspora communities carry with them the pain of conflict and violence from the past, women have a unique role to play in building peace both within the diaspora and reaching back into their countries of origin.

Learning from the two year Community Reconciliation programme here at St Ethelburga’s Centre for Reconciliation and Peace, they will be asking:

What is the unique role and contribution women are making to peace within diaspora communities?
How is that role acknowledged and supported or sometimes suppressed?
What are the obstacles women face as peace builders, and how can these be challenged and overcome?

There will be a panel of women peacebuilders including: Lajeel Abdirahman, working for peace among the Somali diaspora in London and training girls and women in conflict resolution skills in Mogadishu; Sham Selvaratnam, working as an art psychotherapist with families of the disappeared in Sri Lanka; and Amina Dikedi, founder and Chair of the international women’s peacebuilding network, Creators of Peace.

Bring your personal stories of the pains and joys of working for peace, and listen to the shared experience and new perspectives from others.  They warmly invite community and faith leaders and organisers, women working in peace building, people from diaspora communities, and anyone with an interest in this topic for an evening of honest and inspiring conversation where we can encourage one another in our work for peace, from the grassroots in families and communities through to contributing to formal peace processes.

After the dialogue there will be opportunities for networking. You can book you place for free on their website.
