Surah al-Nahl (the Bee) is the 16th Chapter of the Qur’an named after a reference to the bee in verse 68 of the Surah where we are told that Allah inspires the bee in making honey. The Qur’an describes both the Qur’an itself and honey as ‘healing’ (shifa) for the spiritual and physical ailments of mankind. This Sürah presents very convincing proofs of the oneness of God (Tawheed) and refutation of association partners with Him (Shirk) based on clear ‘signs’ in the universe and in people’s own creation. The Surah enumerates many of the blessings (Ni’mah) of Allah and repeatedly mentions this theme: “If you count the blessings of Allah, you will not be able to enumerate it” (v.18), “Whatever blessings you have, it is from Allah” (v.53) and “They recognize the blessings of Allah but deny it” (v.83).
Among the numerous blessings enumerated in this Surah are Divine Revelation (v.2), creation of heavens and earth (v.3), creation of humans (v.4), cattle providing food, clothing and transport (v.8), water (v.10), plants (v.11), subjugation of the universe to human beings (v.12), adornment of the earth (v.13), the sea (v.14), mountains (v.15), stars (v.16), rain (v.65), milk (v.66), spouses (v.72), faculties of understanding (v.78), birds (v.79), homes (v.80) and food (v.114). In Surah Ibrahim that we studied previously, Allah says: “If you are grateful, I will give you more. But if you are ungrateful, then My punishment is severe” (14:7). Towards the end of this Surah, we are told that Prophet Ibrahim was chosen by God because he was “grateful for His blessings” (Shakir li An’umih) [v.121].
